Lost a pet? Found a pet? Looking to add a new pet to your family? Did you know the Wise County Animal Shelter is located in Decatur right off Hwy 51 S?

My children and I frequently volunteer at the animal shelter. We take dogs out for some fun and exercise. While we have them out, I take pictures of them to share on social media. So often, in the course of our activities helping the shelter, we have heard people say they never realized the shelter is there. The building is kind of hidden from the main road. It sits back behind the county impound lot, before the Wise County dump. Many residents don’t realize it’s there.

The shelter handles animal control services, including picking up strays, for all of the unincorporated areas of Wise County, as well as for many of the cities within the county. The shelter actually covers an area of over 900 square miles! So if you’ve lost your pet, be sure to check at the shelter. There’s a good chance it may turn up there.

The shelter also has pets available for adoption. Fees are $30 per animal, for both dogs and cats. Adopter is responsible for getting the animal a rabies vaccination within 72 hours after adoption and spay/neuter (if applicable) within 30 days.
